From Literature to Advertising: The Changing Face of Hindi

 In recent decades, India's education system and changing socio-political landscape have led to the rise of a new class that benefits from the Hindi-speaking majority but prefers using English. This includes Bollywood actors and English-educated professionals in fields like advertising. They profit from Hindi audiences but treat the language casually, without genuinely investing in it.

Earlier, there was strong interest in creating Hindi literature—poetry, novels, and drama—which earned respect and recognition. Writers felt pride in their work. But as markets grew, companies saw the vast Hindi-speaking population as a business opportunity. That’s when Hindi began to be exploited. People who once looked down on Hindi began using it only for commercial gain, especially with the rise of TV and digital media, which opened new doors for advertising.
