Chhath Puja: A Journey of Devotion, Gratitude, and Spiritual Cleansing

Chhath Puja is more than just a festival for millions in India; it's a profound expression of faith, gratitude, and reverence for nature. This ancient Hindu festival is dedicated to the Sun God, Surya, and is celebrated with deep devotion primarily in the northern parts of India, especially in Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, and Jharkhand.

The Meaning Behind Chhath Puja

Chhath Puja is a time to honor the Sun, which is believed to be the source of all life. By worshipping Surya, devotees express gratitude for the energy that sustains our world and ask for blessings of prosperity and health. The festival is also dedicated to Chhathi Maiya, the goddess believed to fulfill wishes and bestow happiness.

The Four-Day Rituals

Nahay Khay : The first day is about internal and external cleansing. Devotees take a holy dip in rivers and prepare simple, pure food, marking the beginning of the fast.

Kharna : The second day involves fasting without water, ending only after sunset with a simple meal of jaggery-based kheer and chapati. This is shared with family and neighbors.

Sandhya Arghya : On the third day, devotees offer ‘arghya’ or offerings to the setting sun at riverbanks or other bodies of water. This evening ritual creates an enchanting atmosphere with devotees singing folk songs and chanting prayers.

Usha Arghya : The final day begins with devotees offering arghya to the rising sun, symbolizing hope, renewal, and gratitude. The fast is then broken, concluding the festival on a note of spiritual satisfaction and joy.

Why Chhath Puja is Special?

Chhath Puja is unique not only for its rigorous fasting but also for its eco-friendly rituals. Devotees use natural items such as sugarcane, coconuts, and seasonal fruits for offerings, which reflect the festival's reverence for nature. The communal spirit is another highlight, with people of all backgrounds joining together at riverbanks, bound by shared faith and tradition.

Personal Reflections

For many, Chhath Puja is a time to reconnect with family, renew traditions, and find peace. The experience of standing in the water, watching the sun rise or set, is a powerful reminder of life's beauty and fragility.
