The Honest Woodcutter

Once upon a time, there was a poor but honest woodcutter who lived in a small village. Every day, he would go into the forest to chop wood and sell it in the market to earn a living. Despite his hard work, he earned just enough to support his family.

One day, while chopping a tree near a river, his axe slipped from his hands and fell into the deep water. The woodcutter was devastated, as he didn't have the money to buy a new axe. He sat down by the riverbank and cried.

Hearing his cries, the river god appeared and asked, "Why are you crying, woodcutter?"

The woodcutter explained his predicament, and the river god took pity on him. The god dove into the river and came up with a golden axe. "Is this your axe?" he asked.

The woodcutter replied, "No, that is not my axe."

The river god went back into the water and came up with a silver axe. "Is this your axe?" he asked again.

The woodcutter replied, "No, that is not my axe either."

Finally, the river god retrieved the woodcutter's old, worn-out iron axe. "Is this your axe?" he asked.

The woodcutter, overjoyed, said, "Yes, that is my axe!"

The river god was impressed by the woodcutter's honesty and gave him all three axes—the golden, the silver, and his old iron axe—as a reward for his integrity. The woodcutter returned to his village and told the story to his neighbors. Soon, his honesty became legendary, and he lived a prosperous life, respected by all.

Honesty is always rewarded. The story of the honest woodcutter teaches us that being truthful and maintaining integrity, even in difficult situations, leads to trust and respect, and sometimes unexpected rewards.
